Man Receives Prison Sentence For Illegal Waste Offences

A man from Ballynahinch in Co Down has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for illegal waste offences.

John Paul Branniff, 34, was sentenced to 18 months in prison at Downpatrick Crown Court.

Nine months of Mr Branniff's sentence will be served on licence.

Mr Branniff had previously been made the subject of a £108,350 confiscation order under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 for depositing and keeping waste on his land, in contravention of the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997.

No waste management licence existed for this site, on which investigating officers from the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) found around 2,000 tonnes of mixed waste.

This waste included construction and demolition wastes, plastics, timber, metals, carpet and textiles. A substantial amount of waste burning is also believed to have taken place on the site.

Mr Branniff was ordered to pay the confiscation order within three months, or else face a further two years' imprisonment.
