There are 1,500 people on the housing waiting list in Tralee, Sinn Féin has revealed.
Deputy Martin Ferris said the crisis is 'out of control' and said there is suffering behind the statistics.
He said: "Every one of those people is being disadvantaged by being homeless. Children who are homeless will suffer the consequences for years; in their schooling, their social skills, their very lack of familiarity with normal family life in a normal family home."
Deputy Ferris also told the Dáil on Tuesday that he knows a mother who is living in unsuitable conditions despite having a toddler being treated for cancer.
He concluded: "The solution to this crisis is to build houses. It is not complicated; it is, in fact, very simple. Build houses."
