Sinn Féin is urging the Government to ensure that the historic quarter at Moore Street in Dublin is redeveloped in a "respectful and dignified manner".

Leader Gerry Adams said the Moore Street area is one of the most historical and locations in Ireland.

He said: "The National Museum has described it as 'the most important site in modern Irish history'. Yet, whilst it is now in State ownership, the Minister responsible persists in carrying out the discredited plan devised by the developers. Developers should not be setting the agenda.

"In no other country in the world, whatever the complexion of politics, would such an iconic site be in the state it is at present.

"The Taoiseach and the Minister for the Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht must suspend the planned works and go back to the drawing board in conjunction with all of the stakeholders involved - the relatives, the campaigners, the traders and the local community.

"The Government must ensure that the historic quarter at Moore Street is redeveloped in the respectful and dignified manner befitting of its status. They must give a commitment to ensure that the entire battlefield site is developed as a historic quarter, and that all necessary steps are taken to ensure that happens."
