Sinn Féin Vice President Mary Lou McDonald TD has stated that only a Sinn Féin government would halt water charges in Ireland.
Speaking ahead of Right2Water demonstrations this Saturday, Deputy McDonald said only her party would ensure the country's water supply is kept within public ownership.
She said: "Water charges are the product of Fianna Fáil's term in office and have been wilfully implemented by Fine Gael and Labour, despite the latter's pledge at the last general election not to introduce them.
"The debacle that is Irish Water has seen millions upon millions of euros wasted in pursuit of implementing an unfair and unjust tax that hits low and middle income families hardest.
"Irish Water must go, and water charges must go."
