A contractor has been given the go-ahead to develop Gaelscoil Bharra in Cabra, Dublin.
Sinn Féin welcomed the news and hopes construction work will begin as soon as possible.
Dublin Central TD Mary Lou McDonald said: "This is fantastic and long overdue news and a victory for Cabra. A massive congratulations must go to the teachers, children and parents at Gaelscoil Bharra for forcing the department into this u-turn.
"This community has been waiting 20 years for this school and previous generations have had to spend their entire time at this school being educated in pre-fab accommodation.
"Just last week the school was informed that funding for the new school was to be reviewed raising a question mark over the entire project.
"However, the community came together and made it clear in no uncertain terms that this is not acceptable and the department has now reversed that decision, cleared the funding and issued a letter to the contractor to begin work."
