The Inis Oirr pier in Galway is to be extended by 90 metres to improve access and increase safety on the island.
The Government recently allocated €8 million for development works on the pier, under the Capital Investment Plan 2016- 2021.
Fine Gael TD for Galway West, Sean Kyne, welcomed the news and also confirmed that breakwater structure is to be attached.
Mr Kyne said: "Rock dredging works will take place and, crucially, some structural works to repair damage caused in the storms in 2014 will also be carried out.
"The proposed works will provide a safe harbour for everyone accessing Inis Oirr, and alleviate congestion arising from the transportation of cargo and passengers to and from the island. The works will also provide much needed shelter for berthing vessels in the harbour.
"Fine Gael has a long term economic plan designed to keep the recovery going which will ensure we can continue to make these kinds of investments that benefit local communities."
