Belfast City Council has voted in favour of the Save Moore Street Campaign.
Sinn Féin Councillor Niall Ó Donnghaile welcomed the vote and said the historic, cultural and political significance of Moore Street is "truly massive".
He said: "Firstly I am very proud that Belfast as a city has added our voice to the campaign for the retention of Moore Street and the development of a fitting national monument and revolutionary quarter in line with the wishes of the 1916 families.
"Increasingly right across Ireland more and more voices are raising their concerns about the utter contempt with which the government is treating the national monument and the very real economic benefits that the development of Moore Street provides to the island as a whole."
