The government's inaction on the issues of housing and homelessness has left thousands of people in a very vulnerable position, Fianna Fáil candidate in Dublin Central Mary Fitzpatrick has said.

Speaking following a pre-election appeal by the Capuchin Day Centre, Ms Fitzpatrick said: "The current government has failed people utterly. Br. Kevin Crowley said today that there are more people at risk of dying on the side of the road tonight than when he started the Centre in 1969.

"That is a blistering indictment of the Fine Gael and Labour government and the current crisis is a direct consequence of the government's denial of the problem and their failure to respond.

"If I am elected housing in Dublin Central and throughout the city will be my first priority. Fianna Fáil has plans to build 45,000 social houses and to put the proper supports in place to ensure this crisis is alleviated once and for all."
