Serious concerns have been raised in relation to the exploratory drilling in Carrickfergus and East Antrim area.
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan is calling on the firm behind the drilling to meet with local representatives and residents to discuss their concerns.
Mr McMullun said people are worried on how it will effect the local environment, particularly the water quality in the area.
He said: "There is also growing concern that this drilling could be a precursor to an application to carry out controversial fracking in the area, which would be totally unacceptable.
"Other also have fears about the impact this operation is having on the forest at Woodburn."
