The High Court has declared 1916 Moore Street buildings in Dublin a national monument.

Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan welcomed the decision and accused the government of ignoring their pleas.

She said: "On two occasions I have raised the Save Moore Street campaign with Ms Claudia Luciani, Director of Democratic Governance from the Council of Europe.

"I have also spoken in the European Parliament on the matter.

"I will inform my colleagues in Europe of the decision and I will be asking that they now maintain a watching brief on the matter.

"Mr Justice Barrett's decision is vindication for the 1916 relatives. I look forward to a new approach from the government."

Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said: "It is a metaphor of our times that in this centenary year of the 1916 Easter Rising that the relatives of the 1916 leaders and their supporters should be forced to take the State to the high court in order to save our national heritage, and that the state was defending the interests of a developer.

"The incoming Government must now go back to the drawing board with all stakeholders, and act urgently to preserve and develop the GPO/Moore Street area to become a historic revolutionary quarter which is of social, cultural and economic benefit to Dublin and the rest of Ireland."
