The ongoing housing crisis is having a "serious and detrimental impact" on the lives of citizens, according to Sinn Fein.

Sublin Fingal TD Louise Reilly said over the course of the recent election the situation has worsened.

She said: "The housing crisis has not gone into stasis as the political circus rolls on. The 'he said, she said' reports coming from talks may have made for interesting headlines weeks ago but in that space of time, dozens more families have been forced from their homes and into emergency accommodation. The numbers experiencing homelessness have passed 6,000, with over 1,800 children now spending their formative years in hotels and hostels.

"Sinn Féin produced a comprehensive document on how we would deal with the housing crisis; we identified how 100,000 social and affordable homes could be built over the course of two Dáil terms. Last week, we hosted a cross-party briefing in Leinster House with Erica Fleming that unfortunately only had representation from the AAA, PBP and the Independents4Change Group.

"There are some who are engaging positively with the housing crisis, trying to find solutions. It seems the establishment parties would rather hide behind mealy mouth excuses and even go so far as to blame the Constitution for their total inaction on the issue."
