The approval of an incinerator at Cork Harbour would be damaging to the strategic potential of the area, according to Sinn Fein.
Mr Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire TD made the comments as part of his oral submission to An Bord Pleanála.
He said: "Such worthwhile developments include the ongoing development of the NMCI, and IMERC campus including the Beaufort Building and Wave energy research lab.
"I re-emphasise that it would rather perverse to see that an Incinerator, with all the risks, hazards and potential implications for the local environment, would be located almost side by side with a world class research facility examining Wave Energy, with clean, 21st Century Energy being researched adjacent to an incinerator.
"Approval would go totally against the strategy that is developing for the Harbour, by Cork County Council, various Departments, and the community. There are three Masterplan areas within sight of the location, and numerous important strategic assets."
