Offaly County Council has teamed up with Irish Water to launch a programme which will examine trade effluent discharged from business premises to the Birr wastewater network and treatment plant.
The programme will be rolled out through community engagement in May. Information gathered from the programme will be used to identify, monitor, license and control discharges to the sewer resulting from business activities.
Martin Hogan, Wastewater Source Control & Licensing Project Manager said: "Irish Water, in partnership with Offaly County Council, is delivering significant capital investment at the Birr Wastewater Treatment Plant. This will ensure the longevity and efficiency of the wastewater network and treatment plant and protect the local environment."
