UNESCO World Heritage Site Skellig Michael has re-opened to visitors, the Office of Public Works (OPW) has confirmed.
The site, which is located off the coast of Kerry, opened on Sunday, 15 May, a day later than initially planned. It is understood the opening was delayed due to additional work that needed to be carried out following a major rockfall on the main visitor access route on Lighthouse Road.
Staff at the OPW undertook engineering and technical assessments at the Island in vulnerable areas and agreed that the main risk to visitors from further rockfalls has passed and the Island is now ready to open to the public. Staff will, however, continue to monitor the situation with their advisers.
Assuming no further incidents occur, the OPW has said it expects the site to remain open to the public until the scheduled seasonal closing date on 02 October.
