The Labour Party has proposed changes to the Constitution that would see a referendum to keep Irish Water and energy firm ESB under public ownership.

If the amendment is approved it would mean Ireland could not privatise gas, electricity or water services.

The Green Party welcomed the Bill and said Fine Gael has no reason to oppose the initiative.

Green Party Deputy Leader Catherine Martin, TD for Dublin Rathdown, said: "People from across the political spectrum will support this Bill. It's time for this Dáil to make a bold gesture that proves, once and for all, that our water resources are not for privatisation.

"The fear that water services will be privatised is a real concern. Despite assurances from Ministers about the water utility being retained by the State, the fact is that Irish Water will be a very attractive opportunity for investors in years to come. A referendum is the only way that the continued public ownership of water can be guaranteed."
