The Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW) has been questioned over ongoing delays in delivering the planned flood relief scheme in Cork.

Fianna Fail TD for Cork South Central Michael McGrath said Minister Sean Canney confirmed the work will take place in the third quarter of this year followed by a public consultation phase and detailed design of the scheme.

Minister McGrath said: "He advised me that advance works are planned at Morrison's island and the overall flood relief scheme for Cork City will move to construction in 2018.

"It is now approaching seven years since the devastating flood event in Cork City in November 2009. It is immensely frustrating for homeowners and businesses that the promised flood relief scheme has still not been delivered. Many business owners and householders are living in fear of another flood event and are doing so in the absence of flood insurance cover. I will continue to press the OPW and the Government to ensure this flood relief scheme is completed without further delay."
