Old watermains in Co Carlow are to be replaced after Irish Water confirmed it is to invest €5.5 million in a rehabilitation programme.
Site investigation works are to begin on the Carlow Water Mains Rehabilitation Project in August and they are expected to take up to 12 weeks.
The scheme involves the rehabilitation and replacement of approximately 14km of ageing water mains with new heavy duty polyethylene pipes and the replacement of approximately 1,200 water service connections in Carlow Town, Tullow, Bagenalstown and Tinnahinch.
The work will be carried out by IGSL Ground Investigation and Geotechnical Specialists working on behalf of Irish Water.
Mark O'Duffy, Water Networks and Rehabilitation Programmes Regional Lead, Irish Water said: "Upgrading Co Carlow's water infrastructure and the replacement of many older pipes will result in significant benefits for residents and businesses across Co Carlow providing a more secure, robust water supply and reducing leakage in the network. Over the coming months the project team will be undertaking site investigation and surveying work in order to assist in the design of the water network upgrade. We'll make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum and people in each area will be notified in advance of the works commencing."
