McCallan Brothers has started work to strengthen and widen a bridge in Maghera, Co L'Derry.
Work on the £250,000 scheme is being carried out at Milltown Bridge on the Craigadick Road.
A footway has been built from Maghera to the bridge, however the narrow road width means the footway could not be provided across the existing structure without it being widened first.
Infrastructure Minister Chris Hazzard said: "This bridge widening will complete a missing footway link between Maghera and Milltown with its associated GAC sports facilities.
"This current work will involve the construction of new foundations in the river and the placing of precast arch sections as well as the removal of the existing road surface to permit strengthening work to be carried out on the original part of the structure.
"The new work will allow provision of a footway and replacement parapets will be finished in masonry similar to the existing bridge."
The road will be closed to traffic for a 12 week period with diversions via A29 Tobermore Road and A6 Glenshane Road. Pedestrians will be accommodated during the works.
Sinn Féin MLA Ian Milne said: "This work will not only improve the road for motorists but also for pedestrians as a missing link of footpath across the bridge will be completed.
"The upgrade work will help the local community access GAA facilities on the other side of the bridge.
"This investment is further evidence of Sinn Féin ministers investing in local communities."
