We need a "common approach" to tackle fuel poverty, according to Sinn Féin.
MEP Martina Anderson made the statement at a conference in Bratislava in Slovakia this week.
She said: "With rising energy costs more and more people across Europe are experiencing fuel poverty. It is simply unacceptable in 2016 that people should be faced with the choice of whether to heat or eat.
"A number of EU member states have put in place measures to tackle fuel poverty and international energy companies cannot be allowed to ride roughshod over those measures.
"We need a common approach to tackling fuel poverty and I look forward to playing a role in that."
