The Limerick to Cork motorway urgently needs to be upgraded, according to Sinn Féin.
At a recent meeting, the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O'Connor, confirmed she would be contacting the local councils to make sure the road was given "priority".
However, Sinn Féin spokesperson for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Maurice Quinlivan TD gave a guarded welcome to the announcement.
He said: "I will be reminding the Minister of her commitment to deal with this issue and holding her to account.
"The Limerick to Cork road is a crucial infrastructure project that urgently needs to be up graded if we are to be serious contenders in attracting Foreign Direct Investment to the region.
"The people in the south-west deserve jobs and investment; anything else will be just another broken promise from this government."
