A total of 80 new commercial buildings in Fingal have not received a rates valuation certificate, according to Dublin West Sinn Féin representative Paul Donnelly.
Councillor Donnelly added that the potential loss in rates revenues is costing "hundreds of thousands" of Euro for the local council, while the issue is "costing millions" across the state.
"Commercial rates are only set following a site visit by the valuation office and issuing of a valuation certificate to the local authority," he said. "At present, there is an unacceptable delay in site visits and the issuing of certificates with no provision of the retrospective collection of rates.
"Fingal County Council have the highest amount of new commercial properties in the state with 80 new commercial buildings that have not had a rates valuation certificate and therefore are currently enjoying a rate free status.
"Council Officials have indicated that this is costing Fingal Council hundreds of thousands of Euro in lost revenue. This is replicated across the state and is costing millions in lost revenue which should go to local services."
In addition, Councillor Donnelly pledged to work alongside Eoin O'Broin TD and Pearse Doherty TD to close the loophole and "ensure the valuations office have the resources to fully collect the due rates".
