The incident happened in Cherry Orchard on Monday, 19 December.
Sinn Fein Councillor condemned the attack and said it was luck it was not fatal.
He said: "A totally innocent man going about his work to provide social housing was brutally attacked.
"It was wrong and should be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Our thoughts are with the man and his family. We wish him a speedy recovery.

"The response from the community has been of revulsion at the attack. I have been inundated with messages from the residents supporting the workers on the site. Local people will not be bullied by the criminals involved in this attack.
"We need a full and adequate response from the Gardaí . All the resources required must be made available to ensure site workers receive protection that allows them go about their business.
"I have supported the building of the these houses from the start and I will continue to work with locals and builders to ensure his project is completed."
