Work has started on a flood alleviation project in east Belfast.

The work is taking place on the Upper Newtownards Road and Knock Road area.

Initial works will commence around the Upper Newtownards Road junction with Hawthornden Way/Knock Road and also on the Knock Road adjacent to the Comber Greenway.

The infrastructure project will involve the upgrade of existing and installation of new sewers on the Upper Newtownards and Knock Roads, as well as sewers within some other residential streets.

The two key elements of the work will be carried out on the Upper Newtownards Road and Knock Road between June and September 2017. During this time, temporary lane closures will be required for safety reasons and two-way traffic will be maintained at all times on these arterial routes (with a minimum of one lane in each direction).

However traffic delays are expected and motorists may wish to consider an alternative route where possible.

The project is being programmed to finish in advance of the implementation of the new Belfast Rapid Transport (BRT) system in September 2018.
