Fine Gael TD for Kildare South, Martin Heydon has clarified for homeowners that assurances are already in place, and people should not listen to Fianna Fáil's scaremongering on the matter.
He said: "The Government has already provided assurances for mortgage holders in relation to mortgage interest relief through commitments made in the Programme for Government. Fianna Fáil’s shameless efforts to score political points on this issue should not be allowed to cause undue concern or stress for families.

"The fact is, the Programme for a Partnership Government contains a commitment to retain mortgage interest relief beyond the current end date, on a tapered basis, until 2020.
"As the current legislation provides for the relief to continue to end-December 2017 it was not necessary to include legislation in the Finance Bill 2016 to provide for the tapered extension of the relief.
"However the Budget 2017 speech re-stated the Government’s intention to extend mortgage interest relief beyond the current end date to 2020, with details of the extension to be set out by Minister Donohoe later this year in Budget 2018."
