Sinn Fein has hit out at the Government for investing €500 million to install water meters throughout Ireland.

The party said the government should have out the money into the infrastructure after a water main burst in Navan which left several households without water.

Sinn Féin TD Peadar Tóibín, who is the chair of Meath Right2Water, has said: "Navan has a population of over 30,000 people. It's the 4th biggest town in the state. First and foremost, the government need to ensure that every resource necessary is used to get the supply back up and running as soon as possible.

"Irish Water needs to be honest with people from the outset. After the last water outage, there is very little trust in their pronouncements. In Drogheda last week, people were not given the full facts from the start and confusion abounded.

"Fine Gael need to stop fighting elections on the basis of tax cuts for their target vote and start committing to real infrastructure investment for all. I, along with my Sinn Féin colleagues, will be in Navan throughout the day and for as long that is needed with bottles of water to keep people going."
