Water restrictions for consumers in Carlow have now been lifted.
Irish Water confirmed the Sion Cross Water Treatment Plant is producing water that is fully compliant with Drinking Water Regulations.
The restrictions were put in in place due to a fuel spill in the area. Irish Water has put in place a new process at the treatment plant to provide a specific barrier to hydrocarbons and to protect the public water supply.
Irish Water worked closely with the HSE, Carlow County Council and other agencies to ensure there was no risk to drinking water supplies. Irish Water wishes to reassure customers that following the work carried out by Irish Water, Carlow County Council, and in consultation with the HSE, that the town's water supply is safe to drink.
Work has also been carried out by the Environment Section of Carlow County Council to remediate the fuel spill to the river and lands upstream of the Sion Cross Water Treatment Plant.
As a precautionary measure at the time of the fuel spill, the Sion Cross Water Treatment Plant, which supplies part of Carlow town and surrounding areas, was shut down. While the Treatment Plant was closed for production, Carlow town continued to be supplied from alternative sources.
