Construction work to upgrade and improve the Newcastle Wastewater Treatment Plant is to begin soon.
Irish Water has partnered with Wicklow County Council to ensure the plant is fully compliant with the Environmental Protection Agency's regulations.
A total of €350,000 is being invested in the project which is expected to take five months to complete.
The project includes the construction of new inlet screens, a new storm water tank, flow monitoring and sampling upgrades, new dosing systems, other process upgrades, a new control building and welfare facilities, upgrades to existing monitoring equipment and health and safety improvements.
The proposed upgrade at the Newcastle Wastewater Treatment Plant will ensure that Irish Water is fully compliant with the EU Urban Wastewater Directives.
Ivan Corcoran, Capital Programmes Lead, East and Midlands Region, said: "The proposed upgrade at the Newcastle Wastewater Treatment plant will increase the efficiency of the plant and reduce the risk of overflows at times of heavy rainfall. This investment will benefit the environment as the risk to overflows into the Newcastle Stream will be reduced."
