A man has been sentenced to 200 hours community service for breaching waste management legislation at Antrim Crown Court.
Ian Thompson had been directed to safely remove hazardous waste from his yard, which was the result of his illegal fuel laundering plant.
On 28 May 2013 NIEA officers were passing the site and observed lorries depositing construction and demolition waste on site.
On 14 August 2013 officers of the NIEA entered the site and found that the yard had been dug out and a nearby field had been covered in waste to a depth of up to two metres. The site was discharging leachate into an adjacent sheugh - tests on this leachate showed it to be highly polluting. Tests on the waste showed it to be hazardous and was heavily contaminated with diesel.
On November 2013 Officers returned to the site under warrant and surveyed the site. The waste covered an area equivalent to four football pitches and when the officers dug down into the site they found a pre-existing unauthorised landfill below the present one.
