Work is to start to improve the Loughrea sewer network in Galway.

The work, which will begin this month, aims to reduce out of sewer flooding and also the frequency and quantity of storm water overflow spills to the St Clerans River which will help improve water quality.

Irish Water is investing €200,000 in the project.

The firm is working with Galway County Council to deliver the Loughrea Town Main Drainage - Gort Road Sewer and Manhole Rehabilitation Contract.

The programme of works involves jetting, cleaning and CCTV surveying of over 4km of the sewer network. Sections of the network identified from the CCTV report will be rehabilitated using localised repair or complete re-lining techniques. Rehabilitation of manholes will also take place to further minimise surface water infiltration.

Eunan Canavan, Irish Water Capital Programmes, said: "This project will bring significant improvements to the Loughrea sewerage network in terms of reducing infiltration to the system, reducing the flows to the Loughrea WwTP for treatment and improving the quality of water in the St Clerans River by reducing the frequency and quantity of storm water overflows.

"By using non-dig techniques disruptions to road users, businesses and the public in general will be kept to a minimum."

The work is expected to be completed by January 2018.
