Sinn Féin is calling for the consultation of the Metro North project to resume "immediately".
TD for Dublin North West Dessie Ellis raised concerns over the delay in the resumption of the consultation process for Metro North in light of projected population growths and its potential adverse effects on transport capacity.
He said: "At present, the M50 resembles at times a large car park. This congestion is posing a real threat to the economic development of Dublin. I am greatly concerned that the resumption of the consultation process for Metro North has not even begun yet.
"The Metro North is a six year project starting in 2021 to be completed in 2027, a time by which the huge growth in population that has been projected will already be well advanced.
"I demanded that the Metro North project in view of the potential growth in population be delivered in a faster timescale. There is a real possibility of a crisis developing in the near future in our ability to provide sufficient transport capacity for our growing population."
