Response Engineering Starts Work To Improve Wastewater Plant In Galway

Response Engineering Ltd has started upgrade work on a wastewater treatment plant in Galway.

Irish Water is investing €5million in the project to improve the Athenry Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The upgrade will also increase the capacity of the plant from the current 6,000 population equivalent to 9,500 ensuring enhanced capacity to facilitate future population growth and commercial development in the town.


Cathaoirleach of Galway County Council, Councillor Eileen Mannion, said: "This much-needed upgrade spells good news for residents and businesses in Athenry. The town can now look forward to having the wastewater capacity for growth and development which is good news in terms of job retention and creation."

Colm Boyd, Irish Water's Infrastructure Programme Regional Lead, said: "The project is required to ensure that the wastewater treatment facilities for Athenry meet the requirements of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and the EPA's Wastewater Discharge Licence.

"This project will address the deficiencies identified by the EPA and ensure that wastewater overflows and effluent discharge standards to the River Clarin are compliant with the discharge licence requirements and environmental regulations."
