Over €1million has been allocated to 51 clubs and organisations in Laois for vital refurbishment and upgrade works to be carried out.

The works include pitch improvements, refurbishment of dressing rooms, the provision of walking tracks and the purchase of equipment.

Fianna Fáil TD for Laois Sean Fleming welcomed the funding under the Sports Capital Grant scheme.

He said: "While 51 clubs were successful in securing funding under the scheme, 9 others were not successful primarily on technical grounds. I will be asking the Minister to review these applications to see what can be done to help secure the much needed funding.

"Now that the funding has been approved I look forward to all the clubs and organisations carrying out the works as early as possible in 2018 so that they will provide much improved sporting and recreational facilities for their local communities."
