Sinn Fein is calling for the Local Property Tax in Ireland to be abolished.
The party made the call after the government announced it is to reveiew the tax.
The party's spokesperson Pearse Doherty said that the pending increases are an inevitable result of the design flaws of the property tax.
He said: "Now, facing into even higher jumps, they are flapping around looking for a way to reduce the tax impact of their own policies on families. For many families it is simply a tax on debt and on mortgages they can’t even afford.
"When Fine Gael were trying to introduce this tax I pointed out that because it was being introduced at the lowest point in the price cycle it would lead to dramatic increases at revaluation points.
"All analysis points to a shock increase for families across the State.
"Now Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and others are running scared of their own policy and looking for a way out.
"Sinn Féin are opposed to the Property Tax and would scrap it. It is a failed tax."
