Work is to start to replace old and aging water mains in Roscommon.

The work on Athlone Road will start on Monday, 12 February, and is expected to take eight weeks to complete.

Irish Water, in partnership with Roscommon County Council, will replace lead service connections and approximately 420 metres of old and damaged water mains from St. Coman's Cemetery as far as the hospital/Oldwood housing estate junction.

The works are part of Irish Water's National Leakage Reduction Programme. The programme will involve removing lead pipes from the public water network and reducing the high level of leakage across the country by fixing or replacing ageing water mains over the next four years.

Water Network Regional Lead Dave Murphy, said: "These works will be carried out by Roscommon County Council on behalf of Irish Water. The project is expected to be completed in approximately 8 weeks and will deliver significant improvements to customers who have been affected by disruptions to their water supply due to leakage along the pipe."
