A contract to upgrade the Vartry Water Treatment Plant in Co Wicklow is to be awarded later this year.
Planning permission to refurbish the plant was recently given the go-ahead and construction work is expected to take two years to complete.
A boil water notice for all areas supplied by the plant has also been lifted.
The notice was put in place as a precautionary measure to protect approximately 65,000 people served by the supply following a mechanical failure of the chlorine equipment at the plant.
Normal consumption of the public water supply can resume for all customers.
