Labour is calling for the fuel allowance for older people to be doubled as temperatures are set to drop rapidly over the next few days.
The party's spokesperson Senator Ged Nash urged the Department of Social Protection to facilitate a one-off, double payment of the fuel allowance this week.
He said: "This would amount to an extra €22 or so but would make a huge difference to those on lower incomes.
"We've heard Minister Daly indicate that older people should keep their heating on 24 hours a day during this snap. While this sentiment is welcomed, we need to back it up with resources to ensure people aren't faced with high fuel bills once conditions return to normal."
Sinn Fein spokesperson John Brady said: "I am calling on the Government to provide an additional fuel allowance payment this week either through a top up payment amount or a double fuel allowance payment.
"We must be conscious that there are other vulnerable groups in society who will need assistance during the severely cold weather promised this week. Lone parents, those living alone, people with disabilities and those who are suffering with a long term illness must also be assisted.
"I have heard Government representatives referring to the Exceptional Needs Payment and the Urgent Needs Payment however; these are not guaranteed payments and are, instead at the discretion of Community Welfare Offices across the State."
