Sinn Féin is urging the Human Rights Commission to "step up to the mark" to promote the right to adequate housing.

The party's housing spokesperson, Carál Ní Chuilín, said numerous reports from the UN have expressed concern and called for the issues to be addressed immediately.

Speaking after a meeting with the Human Rights Commission, she said: "I highlighted to the Commission a range of ways in which the right to adequate housing is getting worse. This includes the shortage of social housing and the overreliance on the private rented sector where tenant rights are lower.

"The Commission agreed to raise these issues with the Housing Executive and to monitor progress as part of their annual Human Rights statement.

"It is time for the Commission to step up to the mark."
