Córas Pipeline Services Completes Water Mains Work In Dublin

Córas Pipeline Services has replaced a total of 785 metres of ageing water mains in Dublin.

Irish Water, in partnership with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, has invested €350,000 in the project which took place on the Monkstown Road.

The water main, which was around 140-years-old, was prone to frequent bursts.

The project replaced the ageing cast iron water main with a modern, high density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic water main. A problematic, shared backyard water main supplying a number of houses on Monkstown Road was taken out of service and the houses were connected directly to the new water main. The new main has provided customers with a more reliable water supply, increased water pressure and removed any issues around discoloured water which were happening when their water supply was fed from the old water main.

The project also included upgrading the existing fire hydrants on Monkstown Road to meet the current fire regulation standards and the replacement of old valves, most of which have not worked for years.

Ivan Corcoran, Capital Programme Lead, said: "It is vital that this ageing water main was replaced. The water main dates back to approximately 1870 and customers in the area have been impacted by frequent water outages. The new water main has secured the water supply for customers and provided them with a reliable water service. During the project the fire hydrants along Monkstown Road were replaced as they currently don't meet fire regulation standards. The replacement of the fire hydrants has ensured that the emergency services will have access to equipment that meets the correct standards should an emergency arise."
