Plans have been announced by Irish Water to build a new wastewater treatment plant in Castletownbere in an effort to stop the discharge of untreated wastewater in Bantry Bay.
Alongside the plant, the plans also include the construction of an associated sewage network and infrastructure.
Irish Water, in collaboration with Cork County Council, will unveil the plans in full at an information event on May 1.
The proposed plant will be situated at the Drom South, and will initially have a 2,168 capacity but with the potential to expand to 3,250.
New pumping stations will also be built at Castletownbere Hospital, Brandyhall Bridge, Came Woods and in the port area, in accordance with the project. New rising mains, sewers, and a new marine outfall are all included in the project plans.
Subject to statutory approvals, the planning application will be submitted to Cork County Council this year and construction work will begin in 2020.
