A new report has been published that suggests the approved £240 million incinerator in Antrim is not needed.
Campaigners against the incinerator, NoArc21, commissioned a professional report that concluded there was not enough waste to warrant the facility. The report was compiled by specialist independent waste consultants Eunomia Research & Consulting.
DUP representatives welcomed the new report.
Mr Paul Girvan said: "I commend NoArc21 for the efforts in bringing forward this report which raises serious questions around the need for the Hightown Incinerator. What is clear from this report is that the proposed incinerator at Hightown Quarry is not a viable solution to meeting our waste needs in Northern Ireland.
"I will be seeking an urgent meeting with the Department for Infrastructure to ensure this report is raised at the highest levels of government."
Pam Girvan MLA added: "In very simple terms, why should any rate payer support the vast (£240M) expenditure in to a process which is not required?"
