GMC Contractors is to deliver sewer upgrades in Galway City to address odour issues and reduce flooding.
The €2 million works will involve the relining of the existing masonry sewer with a new pre-cast plastic sleeve.
Sewer cleaning, CCTV surveys and site investigation works will take place between July and October. The liner installation works will be carried out from January to July 2019.
The upgrades will be made for several areas in the city, including William Street, Shop Street, High Street, Cross Street, Augustine Street, and Flood Street.
Commenting on the project Eunan Canavan, Capital Programme Regional Lead, said: "This is an essential project for Galway City and in delivering it we are mindful of the impact the works could have on businesses. Because of this no works will be carried out during the month of December in order to avoid traffic congestion during the Christmas period. There will also be no works on William Street/Shop Street/High Street during July and August in order to avoid disruption during the peak tourist season.
"Irish Water and the contractors will make every effort to ensure odours are kept to a minimum and trenchless techniques will be used for this project in order to reduce impact on businesses and residents."
