Irish Water has proposed a series of emergency upgrade works at the Lough Talt Water Treatment Plant in Sligo.
The works will ensure a safe water drinking supply for local people.
A planning application has been lodged for the project.
The proposed development will address the absence of an effective crypto barrier, and also provide mitigation against the formation of THMs.
In 2015, Irish Water proposed to construct a water treatment plant downstream of the existing site but was refused planning permission. It was declined due to conservation concerns.
The upgrade works will be in place at the plant for up to 10 years.
