GMC Utilities Group has begun work to replace an old water mains in Kilbeggan, Westmeath.

Approximately 500 meters of old cast iron water mains will be decommissioned and replaced with high density plastic pipes.

The work will be carried out from The Distillery on the Main Street, on The Square and to the post office roundabout in Kilbeggan.

The project is part of Irish Water's €500 million national Leakage Reduction Programme.

Derek Deignan, Regional Lead on the Leakage Reduction Programme, said: "The replacement of these ageing water mains and public side lead service connections in Kilbeggan will improve the security of supply for local residents and businesses and reduce current high levels of leakage. Replacing the existing water mains and service connections with a new modern pipes will provide a long term solution to ensure a safe and secure water supply is delivered to our customers."

Work is expected to take four weeks to complete.
