Transport Minister Shane Ross has unveiled details of a new tolling incentive scheme for electric vehicles (EV).

The EV Tolling Scheme will bring a discount in toll fares for drivers, with a 50% discount for battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and a 25% toll discount for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs).

In addition, higher levels of discount will be available across certain toll roads during off-peak journeys, with drivers encouraged to sign up for an EV tag with an approved Toll Tag Provider.

The initiative aims to support the uptake of electric vehicles in Ireland and help reduce carbon emissions. Currently, there are over 5,000 EV's in Ireland, with over 1,000 of which registered so far this year.

Minister Ross said through the EV Tolling Scheme, eligible owners can accumulate up to €500 in toll savings per annum and up to €1,000 in savings for goods vehicles.

"I am delighted to launch the new EV tolling scheme, this incentive is integral to the series of Governmental support measures aimed at promoting a low-carbon transport future," he said.

"We are starting to see a steady rise in EV numbers; this can be attributed to improved technological developments and increased battery ranges alongside continued generous Government supports to reduce purchase and running costs."

The scheme will come into effect from 01 July.
