Plans have been revealed for a wastewater infrastructure upgrade project in Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan.
Irish Water is aiming to purchase lands in Annacroff to facilitate upgrades to the wastewater infrastructure in the region.
A notice of a Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) has been submitted to An Bord Pleanála to acquire the lands. If approved, it is expected works will commence at the end of 2019 and will be completed by early 2021.
Works include upgrades to the existing wastewater treatment plant and construction of a new outfall pipe which, when completed, will improve treatment quality and ensure compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and EPA Wastewater Discharge Licencing. It is planned to relocate the existing outfall from Proules River to the Longfield River by laying a 3.3km outfall pipe.
Other works in this proposed project include the construction of a new entrance from the Oriel Road to the wastewater treatment plant, construction of a new inlet pumping station, upgrade of the existing inlet works, and the replacement of outdated mechanical and electrical equipment with modern, energy efficient equipment.
Colm Boyd, Irish Water's Infrastructure Programme Regional Lead, said: "Some of the important benefits of this project are that it will facilitate future population growth and economic development in the area. The improvements to the treatment plant will also ensure that the water quality in the receiving waters is improved which is a very positive development."
