Up to 5kms of ageing and problematic water mains are to be replaced in the Ballycoolan and Luggacurren areas of Co Laois.
Irish Water has started work to replace the existing pipes, which will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to the customers' property boundary and connecting it to the customers' water supply. The scheme is expected to be completed by the end of September.
The work is part of Irish Water's national Leakage Reduction Programme which, over the next four years, will see €500 million invested to reduce the level of leakage across the country by fixing and replacing ageing water mains.
Georgina O'Reilly, Irish Water's Regional Lead for the Leakage Reduction Programme said: "The water network in Luggacurren has experienced a large number of bursts in recent times causing considerable inconvenience to residents in the area. The replacement of these aging water mains will improve security of supply for local residents and businesses alike.
"Replacing the existing water mains with new modern pipes will provide a long-term solution to ensure a safe and secure water supply is delivered to customers. Irish Water understands this type of work can be inconvenient and will ensure our work crews make every effort to minimise any disruption these works may cause."
