Work Underway To Solve Sewage Problem In Cork Lower Harbour

Contractor Ward & Burke has commenced work to end the discharge of untreated sewage into Cork Lower Harbour.

The work is being completed on behalf of Irish Water through its investment in the Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project. 

A 90-metre section of the road on the R610 close to Passage West library will be closed for four weeks to complete the works, from 13 August until 07 September.


Traffic management plans, including diversion routes, will be in place throughout the project.

When all the Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage works are complete in 2021, the project will treat all wastewater from Passage West, Monkstown, Ringaskiddy, Crosshaven, Carrigaline, Glenbrook, Shanbally, Coolmore and Cobh. This means 20,000 homes and businesses will be connected to the new scheme and raw sewage will no longer be discharged into the Harbour. At present, the equivalent of 20,000 wheelie bins of sewage is discharged into the harbour every day.
