Ulster Carpets To Share Cost Saving Measures At Energy Event

Ulster Carpets is to share a number of cost saving measures in terms of energy at an event organised by Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce (NI Chamber) in partnership with System Operator for Northern Ireland (SONI).

The firm will share its energy strategy at the latest Energy Forum event being held at the Ulster Carpets Castleisland Factory in Portadown next month.

Ulster Carpets opened a new Dye House and Energy Centre at its headquarters in 2017 which not only facilitate a number of manufacturing efficiencies, but also many environmental benefits in line with the company’s Sustainability Policy.

The new facilities costing £10m, are part of a £35m investment by the third-generation family firm which is a major supplier of luxurious Axminster carpets, with exports now accounting for 70% of company sales. The new technology being introduced to the manufacturing company's processes, will ultimately improve capacity by more than 20%.


The new energy centre includes a dedicated steam production plant and advanced heat recovery system so that energy supply can match demand and reduce the environmental impact of the company's work.

Nick Coburn, Ulster Carpets Group Managing Director and Deputy Chairman, said: "Our new Dye House and Energy Centre with its own dedicated steam production plant and advanced heat recovery system is able to match supply to demand leading to a significant reduction in the environmental impact of the process, in line with Ulster’s ambitious environmental goals.

"This new facility, designed to improve energy efficiency and to reduce the company’s energy costs, completes the first phase of our major £40 million regeneration and capital investment programme."

The new Dye House and Energy Centre has resulted in an increase in efficiency and productivity increase while vastly decreasing the firm’s use of energy and production of waste. The company is a shining example of what can be achieved through investing in processes which reduce energy requirements."

Also speaking at the event are Neasa Quigley, Partner at Carson McDowell solicitors and Joe Reynolds from the Energy Division at the Department for the Economy. Both will discuss the importance, and required content, of a future Energy Strategy for Northern Ireland.
