Planning permission has been granted for a new wastewater treatment plant in Spiddal, Co Galway.
The new plant will be located at the site of the existing Údarás na Gaeltacha plant.
Galway County Council approved the plans.
The Irish Water development will serve 1,000 people and will facilitate future growth in the area. Once operational the plant will enhance Spiddal's amenity value by acting as a platform for social and economic development.
The plant will end the discharge of untreated municipal wastewater to Galway Bay by ensuring wastewater receives appropriate treatment.
Subject to the completion of the statutory planning process, the next stage will involve site investigation and preparation of tender documents.
The project is expected to be completed by 2021.
