Nine projects in Co Limerick have secured funding under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme 2018.

Limerick City and County Council helped develop proposals along with the local communities.

The scheme focuses on projects which can help to enhance rural towns and villages, with a particular emphasis on stimulating economic development.

Approximately 12 Limerick projects were submitted to the Department of Rural and Community Development under the scheme, with nine projects eventually sharing €963,918 of funding.

A project in Abbeyfeale received the largest individual funding of €200,000 to help convert the old bank building in the town centre into an E Hub/business facility.

Work will begin on all nine projects in the coming weeks.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick Cllr James Collins said: "This is a great outcome for rural towns and villages across County Limerick. The projects will help enhance the lives of those in the locality, from a new business hub in Abbeyfeale to a playground in Shanagolden. Communities in all these areas will benefit as more and more services are being made available locally."

Gordon Daly, Director of Social Development in Limerick City and County Council added: "This successful funding announcement is further evidence of the strong leadership being shown by rural communities right across Limerick. They are to be strongly commended for helping to drive the development and renewal of their areas in partnership with the Council.

"These projects will make a real difference. They will enhance the quality of life and services in these communities as well as providing facilities and amenities for visitors helping achieve the aim of further growing the tourism industry in County Limerick."
